While other states have just talked about it, Arizona on Wednesday became the first to take official action toward killing its Medicaid program.

Senate Bill 1519, approved by the Senate Appropriations Committee on an 8-5 vote, would end the nearly 30-year-old safety-net program, which now covers more than 1.3 million Arizonans, about half of them children.

The state would forego more than $7.5 billion in federal matching funds, and most of the $2 billion in state funding would be redirected to the general fund, with about $1 billion earmarked for the developmentally disabled, behavioral health care and the "medically indigent."

They have attempted to normalize radical militancy within our political discourse. With tea party politicians like Jesse Kelly, staging events offering the chance to shoot military-grade assault rifles as motivation to "remove Giffords from office" and other tea party candidates suggesting "2nd Amendment remedies" to achieve their political ambitions, it's easy to see why many are thinking tea party right now. Even if a direct connection between Loughner and the right is never found - the point is - it's a recipe for disaster to promote hate, violent threats, and guns as political solutions.

LAKE HAVASU CITY - Lake Havasu City police will soon be equipped with head-mounted video cameras that record their contacts with suspects and citizens.

The city is buying a system from Scottsdale-based Taser International that captures video and audio for later use in court or in other cases where the officer's actions might be in question.

The AXON system has been tested across Mohave County in recent months. Lake Havasu will be the first city in the state to deploy the units operationally.

It is buying seven units, and 90 percent of their cost is being paid for with a U.S. Justice Department grant.

Chrisman, a nine-year veteran who spent his career patrolling the South Mountain Precinct, was arrested hours after the shooting on suspicion of aggravated assault. Police officials said Wednesday that he could face additional charges, possibly murder.

The other officer on the scene told police investigators that Rodriquez was unarmed and that neither officer faced any serious threat of violence, according to court documents that describe his interview with police investigators.

The south Phoenix shooting came amid ongoing citywide discussion of how police misconduct should be investigated, with a municipal task force scheduled to offer recommendations next month.

A federal judge has denied motions by Gov. Jan Brewer, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio and Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu to dismiss a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the tough Arizona immigration law referred to as Senate Bill 1070.

U.S. District Court Judge Susan Bolton issued a detailed ruling Friday allowing the lawsuit to go forward. In her ruling, Bolton found that the plaintiffs, led by the Phoenix advocacy group Friendly House and the American Civil Liberties Union, had standing to bring the lawsuit and that the moment was "ripe" to do so.

Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu says he had nothing to do with a controversial billboard put up in Oracle with his name on it.

The billboard up in the town of Oracle says, "This is our most serious public safety issue and a national security threat to America, Paul Babeu, Pinal County Sheriff" with a photo of a Latino family.

It has angered many who call it racist to simply put a Latino family next to a quote Babeu said in regard to illegal immigration and drug smuggling.

A subpoena seeking research data related to the education of English-language learners in Arizona is drawing fire from civil rights advocates and researchers.Lawyers for state Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne want the data for use in a long-running federal court case over Arizona’s approach to educating its ELL students. But researchers from the University of Arizona, Tucson, and from Arizona State University, Tempe, had promised that the information—which includes the names of study participants—wouldn’t be made public. The raw data requested are associated with three studies conducted by those researchers for the Civil Rights Project/Proyecto Derechos Civiles at the University of California, Los Angeles. The studies take a critical view of Arizona’s requirement that all English- learners be separated into classrooms for four hours each day to learn discrete English skills.

In an effort to make the city of Tempe come out publicly against the infamous SB1070, residents of the city are coming out to march this Saturday, June 5. According to a tempe resident quoted in the press release (which doesn’t quote anyone as an organizer or promoter of the march for a change), the bill attacks Tempe’s multicultural community given that it’s host to the largest public research University in the nation. (Can you imagine how many legal students, Hispanic and not, could potentially get racially profiled as a result of this??? And how many pissed off parents are gonna sue the place?)
